The Tenant (by Freida McFadden)
As a Freida McFadden fan, I eagerly placed a library hold on her latest book, The Tenant, as soon as it was added to Libby. This book delivered all the suspense and unexpected twists that I’ve come to expect from McFadden’s writing.
The majority of the book centers around Blake Porter, a newly appointed vice president of marketing who resides with his fiancée in a charming brownstone. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he is abruptly fired from his job, causing the world he had built to crumble. Struggling to make his mortgage payments, Blake and his fiancée reluctantly agree to rent a room. Whitney, who appears to be the perfect tenant, seems friendly, polite, and pays her rent on time.
Nevertheless, the atmosphere in the brownstone begins to change rapidly. Blake finds himself engaged in petty arguments with his neighbor, a foul odor emanates from the kitchen, and strange noises keep him awake at night.
The Tenant, unlike other McFadden books I’ve read, had a slower pace. It delved deeply into Blake’s character development, which kept me engaged throughout the story. While I anticipated the twists, they didn’t unfold as quickly as I had anticipated, but the wait was worth it. The twists were well-crafted and made for a fantastic read.
I genuinely have no idea how she manages to do it! I made every effort to anticipate the outcome and guess the perspectives of the other characters, but I was completely wrong. To be fair, I’m glad Freida outsmarted me. Her narrative is far superior to what I can only speculate about. Additionally, I’m astounded by her writing prowess. She’s releasing books at a faster pace than Stephen King. I still have a significant amount of catching up to do.
I borrowed the audiobook of The Tenant from my local library using the Libby app. The narration by Will Damron and Christine Lakin was outstanding.
I’m still working my way through all of Freida McFadden’s books. My previous reviews are linked below.
