The Housemaid is Watching (by Freida McFadden)
I continue to be impressed by Freida McFadden’s remarkable talent for suspenseful storytelling. Her ability to immerse me into the story so deeply that once I start a book, I want to shut out the world with my AirPods until the end. I have loved The Housemaid series and admire her unique approach to spacing the books within the life of the protagonist, Millie. Freida is so clever!
In The Housemaid is Watching, Millie is moving into her new home with her husband and two kids. She is thrilled to finally own her own home in an affluent, safe neighborhood. She meets her neighbor, Mrs. Lowell, on moving day and is invited to their house for dinner. Despite her reserved nature, she accepts this opportunity to make friends with their neighbors.
Upon arriving at the Lowell’s house, Millie is greeted by their housemaid, Martha. She has tremendous empathy for Martha since she was in her shoes not so long ago. Strangely, Martha stares at Millie and is quite unfriendly, which makes Millie uncomfortable. Millie begins to question their decision to move to this neighborhood when she suspects someone is watching them and her husband begins to behave suspiciously. Notably, there is a third family living on their street with peculiar tendencies, who issue a warning to Millie about the Lowells.
This novel has a lot of suspicious behaviors among the characters, which kept me wondering what was going on in this idyllic cul-de-sac. As the pieces began to come together, I started to anticipate some of the twists, but I didn’t figure it out exactly. I loved that the ending was so dramatic.
So I suppose this is the end of the series? I have a copy of the novella, The Housemaid’s Wedding, yet to read. I wouldn’t mind another novel…
I purchased the audiobook of The Housemaid is Watching from Audible, and the narration by Lauryn Allman and Ina Marie Smith is spectacular!
I’m working my way through all of Freida McFadden’s books. My previous reviews are linked below.
