Letter Slot (by Owen King)

I haven’t had the best luck with books by Owen King. He wrote a short story, Letter Slot, as part of The Shivers collection. It’s a collection of short stories by various authors, free for Amazon Prime Members. Since it was a short story, I decided to give it a try.

The story follows a young boy who witnesses his mother’s poor health due to an accident years ago. Despite his mother’s hard work in supporting their two-person family, he expresses his worries and concerns in a letter that he deposits into the letter slot of an abandoned show house. To his astonishment, he receives a response that asks for the name of someone he hates in exchange for good fortune. It sounds too good to be true, right?

I was pleasantly surprised and relieved to find that I enjoyed Letter Slot. It was captivating and had a heartfelt theme that allowed me to empathize with the main characters. The Shivers collection is available on Kindle and Audible, and I particularly enjoyed listening to the audiobook narrated by Grover Gardner.
