Famous Last Words (by Gillian McAllister)

This is my first time reading Gillian McAllister. I had a strong feeling that I had read at least one of her books before, but my Goodreads account says otherwise. Regardless, Famous Last Words was an excellent starting point for me.

Camilla awakens on her first day back to work in publishing and her infant daughter’s first day at daycare to discover that her husband, Luke, has already left the house. Despite her frantic attempts to reach him through texts and phone calls, she finds a cryptic note he left behind. As Camilla begins her day at the office, a breaking news story interrupts her, revealing a hostage situation unfolding. When the police arrive, she is shocked to learn that her husband is not a hostage but rather the hostage taker.

I thoroughly enjoyed the suspenseful hostage situation at the beginning of the novel. It was an excellent way to start a captivating story. As I delved deeper into Camilla’s life after the incident, I found myself increasingly drawn to her quest to uncover secrets and solve a complex puzzle. Nile, the hostage negotiator, played a significant role in the narrative. His personal and professional struggles provided an entertaining parallel to Camilla and Luke’s story. While I managed to decipher certain aspects of the plot, the conclusion was a delightful surprise that left me thoroughly satisfied.

I borrowed the audiobook, Famous Last Words, from my local library using the Libby app. Emilia Fox’s narration was truly exceptional.
