Cut and Thirst (by Margaret Atwood)
This is my first Margaret Atwood story. When Cut and Thirst was released in 2024, it was offered as a bonus short story as part of the monthly Amazon First Reads program.
A delightful group of elderly women, former professors, gather weekly to savor exquisite cheeses and bask in their friendship. However, Fern, the fourth woman in the group, has fallen ill and can no longer join them. Devastated, her faithful friends revisit the deceptions of a group of male poets who discredited Fern’s literary work. Their selfish actions caused Fern immense professional and emotional harm, leading to a decline in her health. Fueled by anger and a desire for justice, these ladies hatch a plan to murder the disgraceful poets.
Cut and Thirst is a story about the enduring loyalty of friends that has spanned decades. Atwood’s tale of a group of women who devise a plan of revenge is humorous. It’s a quick and entertaining read.
