Book Lovers (by Emily Henry)

I finally understand the Emily Henry hype. Book Lovers is the first book by her that I’ve read, and it was an absolute delight! I first encountered her in 2023 when my local independent bookstore, Joseph-Beth, hosted a virtual event for the release of Happy Place. During the event, she engaged in a conversation with fellow romance writer Carley Fortune. Although I’m not a fan of romance novels, I was intrigued by Emily when her first book, Beach Read, gained popularity. So, I watched the virtual author event. I thoroughly enjoyed both Emily and Carley, and I’ve been intending to read their books ever since.

Earlier this year, Goodreads organized a Community Challenge, and Book Lovers was one of the qualifying books. I decided to use this challenge as motivation to move some books I’ve been wanting to read to the top of my TBR pile. I placed a library hold for Book Lovers, and only recently did I get my turn. It was a long wait!

Nora Stephens, a literary agent, is dedicated to her younger sister Libby and their growing family, but she neglects her own well-being. She agrees to a month-long vacation with Libby in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, just outside Asheville, one of my favorite places. However, Nora repeatedly encounters a serious and stiff editor she knows from New York, and their initial animosity leads to tension. Despite their differences, they eventually find a common ground and work together to overcome their challenges.

Book Lovers initially reminded me of a Hallmark movie. It had a slower pace compared to the suspenseful thrillers and horror novels I’ve been reading lately. Reading a romance novel is definitely not my forte, but I found myself falling in love with the characters and the storyline. Similar to a thriller, I had no idea how the story would end. I was uncertain whether Nora would get everything she desired. Would I feel disappointed with the ending or would I be completely satisfied? The questions that kept building up in my mind propelled me to keep reading.

Book Lovers didn’t transform me into a romance reader, but it certainly earned my respect for Emily Henry. The story’s quality, the characters’ likability, and the personal growth they experienced all left a lasting impression. I particularly enjoyed how the story centered around the book industry—I’m a huge fan of books that are themed around books! Emily’s writing is so deep and inspiring. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

I borrowed the audiobook of Book Lovers from my local library using Libby. Julia Whelan’s narration was excellent!
